Frequently asked questions
How long should a breathing session be?
Five to ten minutes is a good starting range for structured breathing, and longer is not automatically better. Beginner rounds commonly use a count that feels comfortable rather than strained โ box breathing with a 4-4-4-4 count is a common starting point. Breath retention and forceful techniques are advanced; build up slowly and stop if you feel lightheaded.
What is box breathing?
Box breathing is a square pattern: inhale, hold, exhale, hold, each for an equal count, usually four seconds. The even structure makes it easy to follow and easy to shorten if four seconds feels long โ a 3-3-3-3 count is a fine starting point. It is one of the presets in the guided timer.
Does the timer work with the screen off or the app in the background?
Audio cues and spoken guidance keep running, and the timer advances by wall-clock time rather than counting ticks, so it stays accurate even if the browser throttles the page in the background. On mobile the screen may dim; the stopwatch tool requests a screen wake lock where the browser supports it. For a fully hands-off session, install the site as an app.
Can I save my own timers and sequences?
Yes. Build a custom timer from phases โ each with its own name, duration and spoken cue โ save it, and reuse it. You can also chain saved timers into a sequence so a full routine runs end to end without touching the screen. Saved timers live on your device.
Which alarm sound should I choose?
Whichever you will not sleep through and will not resent. Temple, chime, singing bowl, digital and gong are all synthesised, so no audio files are downloaded and they work offline. Volume is saved, and you can test a sound before starting a session.
Do I have to share a link to start a timer on someone else's device?
No, and deliberately so. A shared link such as /timer/?t=10 loads a ten-minute timer but will not start counting on its own โ the person opening it presses Start. Auto-starting would also mean the first bell and the spoken cues were blocked by the browser's autoplay policy, because audio needs a user gesture.
