Quick Actions
Frequently asked questions
What is the best time of day to practise yoga?
There is no single best time โ the best time is the one you will actually keep. Morning practice tends to suit energy and consistency, while evening practice suits people who are stiff after a day of sitting. In the traditional literature the pre-dawn period (brahma muhurta) is considered favourable, though that is a traditional view rather than a research finding. Pick a fixed slot and let the routine become automatic.
How long should I practise each day?
Ten to twenty minutes daily is a reasonable starting point and is enough to build the habit. Hold times on each pose page give a sensible range โ commonly 20 to 60 seconds, longer for restorative poses. Beginners should avoid long holds in demanding poses and build up gradually rather than pushing into discomfort.
Is it safe to practise every day?
For healthy people, yes โ yoga is generally considered safe when performed properly. The most common injuries are sprains and strains, usually of the knee or lower leg, and serious injury is rare. If you are older, pregnant, or managing a health condition, check with a qualified instructor and your healthcare provider first, because some poses need modifying or avoiding. Sharp pain is a signal to come out of a pose, not to push through it.
Should I practise before or after eating?
Leave roughly two to three hours after a full meal before a physical practice; a light snack an hour before is usually fine. Twisting, forward bends and inverted poses are uncomfortable on a full stomach. For seated breathing and meditation, a shorter gap is usually enough. Traditional guidance is to practise on an empty or near-empty stomach.
I am not flexible โ can I still do yoga?
Yes, and inflexibility is one of the most common reasons people start rather than a reason to wait. Flexibility is an outcome of practice, not a prerequisite. Use the modifications and prop suggestions on each pose page, bend your knees in forward folds, and expect the first few weeks to feel tight. Progress is measured in months.
What is the difference between asana and pranayama?
Asana is the physical posture โ the shapes you hold. Pranayama is breath regulation, the deliberate control or observation of the breath, and it is usually practised seated and still. Traditional yoga treats them as different limbs of the same system; this site keeps both in the same library and lets you filter between poses and breathing practices.
Can I learn yoga at home without a teacher?
You can learn a great deal at home, and every pose page here gives the technique, common mistakes, cautions and modifications to make that practical. NCCIH notes that learning entirely unsupervised is associated with higher injury risk, so treat the advanced entries โ inversions, deep backbends, arm balances, breath retention โ as practising only under a qualified teacher, and get hands-on guidance if you want to go further.
Do I need a mat or any equipment?
No. A non-slip surface is enough to begin; a mat mainly helps grip and cushioning. Props are optional and the pose pages suggest household substitutes, such as a folded blanket, a firm cushion or a wall. Wear something you can move in and you are ready.
